From the Constitutional Convention of 1787 to recent elections, the United States presidency has been pursued by many colorful individuals. With the exceptions of impeachment and resignation, this class will look at elections prior to the 1950’s to avoid “current events”. The peaceful transition of the most powerful office in the world has long been surrounded with controversy, some cases chicanery and in some cases corruption (in the eyes of the beholders). The class is a-political and presented in a light hearted manner with many tid-bits and perspectives that make our president and electoral process come alive like never before.

SAIL: Stay Active & Independent for Life
Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) is a strength, balance and fitness program for aging adults. Performing exercises that improve strength, balance and fitness are the single most important activity that adults can do to stay active and reduce their chance of falling. The entire curriculum of activities in the SAIL program can help improve strength and balance. Light hand weights are used and all levels of fitness are welcome. Most of this class is standing but modifications are available for seated. This class will make you stronger, feel better, stay active and prevent falls. Please bring hand weights with you for class.

The gold rushes increased this movement and the characters this movement produced is exciting. This class will start with “Myths” of the west and identify critical areas in the movement. You’ve been talking for years about writing *that* book. Maybe it’s a novel; maybe it’s a memoir; maybe it’s a collection of essays your great aunt Gussie wrote during the Spanish-American war. The point is, the book can’t write itself. Only you can do that. Learn some writing strategies, how to organize, and pick up some tips about storytelling, too. Art of Fiction
This class session we will cover three outstanding 20th century novels from African-American novelists Zora Neale Hurston, Ralph Ellison and Alice Walker. As always, our quest will be to understand and appreciate what makes these novels unique and deserving of a place in the literary canon of great American novels. The novels we will consider are Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, Ellison’s Invisible Man and Walker’s The Color Purple. These works were both acclaimed and critiqued upon their publication, and among the questions we will ask of them is whether they deserved the praise or the blame bestowed on them. Advanced Chair Caning
Students should have done at least 3 herring bone or 2 French caned chairs. For French Cane, students will be working advanced patterns such as daisy, star of David, snowflake and plantation using mixed sizes of cane. For Herring bone, students will work diamond, X and non-standard patterns both regular (repeating), irregular repeating and nonrepeating patterns (i.e. tree-star-quilt, etc.) Pay instructor for supplies.

Pine Needle Basket Coiling- Beginner
New students will learn to coil long leaf pine needles into small baskets and bowls using basic techniques. Learn to prepare the pine needles, start and end a basket, and coil a basket using the split stitch. Beginner kit will be $30 due to instructor on the first day of class.
