This class session we will cover three outstanding 20th century novels from African-American novelists Zora Neale Hurston, Ralph Ellison and Alice Walker. As always, our quest will be to understand and appreciate what makes these novels unique and deserving of a place in the literary canon of great American novels. The novels we will consider are Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, Ellison’s Invisible Man and Walker’s The Color Purple. These works were both acclaimed and critiqued upon their publication, and among the questions we will ask of them is whether they deserved the praise or the blame bestowed on them. Come and weigh in for yourself! We will have good discussions, great fun, and yes, we will learn a few things, too! Great stuff.
