Important Message from ELM Board Chair
Greetings to all ELM Students, Volunteers, and Supporters!
The ELM Staff and Board are pleased to announce that ELM will be back and in-person for the Fall 2021 session! In addition, ELM will continue to offer several virtual classes via the Zoom video conferencing technology to accommodate both remote instructors and those of you that found this format useful.
We’re eager to begin the Fall Session, and once again see and physically interact with each other as ELM continues its legacy of lifelong learning experiences, social interaction among individuals 50+, and intellectual stimulation within the community.
Kelly Daugherty, ELM’s executive director, has been working very closely with the First United Methodist Church of Marietta (FUMC) for more than a year to address the pandemic-induced challenges and the resultant changes to the church and its operations, guest guidelines, and protocols, as well as assess major changes within the church and its local operational environment.
While we’re looking forward to this in-person session and all it means to us, it is extremely important for each one of us to understand that, per FUMC rules and guidelines, this will be new ELM, and as guests of the church, we need to embrace the changes. Although many things will be the same, a few important items of note include:
For now, ELM will be smaller than in recent past sessions at the church. Fewer classrooms are available to ELM for the time being, and we’re striving to make the most of those rooms for the classes that we’ll have in the Fall Session.
At present, the church does not have a kitchen staff, and lunch will not be served. We are working on arrangements for a single room (to minimize clean-up) where ELM students can bring and eat their lunches. In addition, there are many lunch options in downtown Marietta.
While COVID-19 protocols are not expected to be in place as we’ve known them the past year, this could change due to variant activity. ELM guests will be required to sign a letter from the church waiving COVID liability, as well as agreeing to adhere to the new FUMC requirements.
As before, wearing name badges will be mandatory for all associated with ELM.
The ELM executive director, Kelly Daugherty (or her designee), will continue to be the single point of contact with church staff. ELM guests are not to request help from church staff.
More detailed information on the Fall Session will be forthcoming soon from Kelly; for now, the ELM Staff and Board wanted to share the information we have, and let you know that we sincerely look forward to seeing you again soon!
